Waterford Bypass

Model of bridge and water Model of Waterford Bridge
We have been providing the necessary consulting services to enable the construction of a bypass around Waterford to be procured by Public Private Partnership (PPP). The scheme is one of a number of pilot PPP schemes being developed in Ireland.

The National Primary Route N25 (part of the E30 Euro Route) is the principal route along the south coast connecting Cork to the port of Rosslare. Through Waterford the current route passes along the congested city quays and crosses the River Suir over an opening span bridge, the only bridge crossing in the city.

The scheme runs to the north of Waterford and provides a bypass of the city for through traffic while also catering for local traffic. It comprises 18km of dual carriageway for the bypass, 8km of major link roads and an additional 11km of side roads with a major crossing of the River Suir (225m main span) by means of a cable stayed bridge together with more than 50 other bridge structures.

Our services include:

  • Specimen design
  • Preparation of Employer’s Requirements and contract documents
  • Management of geotechnical, topographical and archaeological studies
  • Risk management
  • Design and procurement of advance works
  • Traffic modelling
  • Accommodation works design
  • Prequalification of bidders
  • Tender assessment
  • Technical review
  • Contract monitoring and administration
Previously we have been involved in the investigation of alternative routes for the bypass, the feasibility of bridge crossings for the River Suir and an evaluation of the potential for tolling the scheme.
