Halfpenny Bridge - one of Dublin’s important
historic landmarks The Halfpenny Bridge is Dublin’s
second busiest crossing of the River Liffey, carry-ing up to 30,000
pedes-trians per day during peak periods.
The Bridge, which is predominantly cast iron with some wrought iron
elements, was construct-ed in 1818. In 1998, Mott MacDonald Pettit
carried out a full inspection and assessment of the bridge
structure and abutments and concluded that the railings, deck and
parts of the truss structure needed to be replaced.
Mott MacDonald Pettit subsequently prepared designs and contract
documents for the refurbishment works and supervised construction
of the works.
The project included the installation of a temporary bridge across
the Liffey to allow the Halfpenny Bridge to be closed during the
course of the works.
The refurbishment was completed in 2002.
